I flip flop quite a bit when it comes to homeschool curriculum. I'm not afraid to change if things aren't working and I love experimenting with new ideas. I do, however, feel I need to focus more on the spiritual schooling with my children. We have an amazing father who leads us in family prayer and scripture study, but I (the mom) was not being consistent in a religious study during our homeschool hours.
During the April 2014 General Conference I heard this talk and it inspired me:
Following Up By M. Russell Ballard
In it, this paragraph struck me as an answer to my prayers.
"To help you in this process, I invite all members, regardless of your current calling or level of activity in the Church, to obtain a copy of Preach My Gospel. It is available through our distribution centers and also online. The online version can be read or downloaded at no cost. It is a guidebook for missionary work—which means it is a guidebook for all of us. Read it, study it, and then apply what you learn to help you understand how to bring souls to Christ through invitation and follow-up. As President Thomas S. Monson has said, “Now is the time for members and missionaries to come together, to work together, to labor in the Lord’s vineyard to bring souls unto Him.”"
So my quest to incorporate Preach My Gospel into my children's study began. As I searched, I found many family home evening ideas, and you can find them on my Pinterest Board, but did not find any that used things like science and writing as part of the Preach My Gospel lessons. I wanted to combine lessons because, well, my children have very short attention spans. I figure if I can get them to sit for one thing and slide in another, I've just killed two birds with one stone.
So, I began to write. Most of the lessons can be done in 30 min more or less. They can be altered for various learning levels. I currently have children ages 1-14 in my home. Obviously, my 1 and 4 year old may not be able to follow me, but they can color, and are expected to be with me during the lessons. This is basically an outline so feel free to use and expand upon it as works best for your family.
